What you need to know and do before taking your boat to the USA:

.
If your boat is 30 feet or more in length, you need to obtain a "Private Vessel Decal" from the US Government before your first entry of the season.
The decal costs $27.50 US and takes 2 to 4 weeks
. You can no-longer purchase these at ports of entry. You can
apply on line
, or by paper.

Now that your boat can go, here's what the people need:
On arrival into the USA every person must report in person to a US Customs and Border Partol officer. You can do this by either presenting yourself at a "Port of Entry" such as the US Customs office on Hart Island near Gananoque with your passport and any other necessary documentation required, or at a videophone such as the one located at Ogdensburg NY.
There are two exceptions to this for boaters. The first is the
Canadian Boat Landing (I-68) Program
. With this option, you visit a US Port of Entry with your passport and appropriate entry documents, have a brief interview, get your photo and thumbprint taken, and for $15.00 each they will issue you an I-68 document good for one year. If
all persons on board your boat
have their I-68, you do not have to go to a customs office. You can report in by telephone when you first land in the USA.

.
The second exception, is the NEXUS program. This program works for several different modes of transportation into the USA. It takes over a month to get, costs $50.00 US, and is good for 5 years. You can
apply on line
(takes about 1/2 hour) and then they do an investigation. After this, you make an appointment for a 1/2 hour interview at a NEXUS issuing office. For boaters, the Nexus card works the same way as the I-68. It also allows you to fast-track entry by land or at airports.
